Raingutter Regatta (Saturday, June 16, 2018)

Parents and Den Leaders, this is a reminder that Pack 227’s “Raingutter Regatta” is scheduled for Saturday, June 16th in the yard behind St. Bonaventure’s Parish Hall. Check-in begins at 12:00 noon and racing will begin no later than 1:00 pm. We will probably finish by 3:00 pm. For those unfamiliar with this event, the Raingutter Regatta is essentially the sailboat equivalent of the Pinewood Derby. Scouts and their parents build a boat together from the approved Raingutter Regatta Trimaran Boat Kit and race their boats against others using only “air power” (ie. Scouts blow through a straw to propel the mast). Here is a link to pictures from one of our past  Raingutter Regattas:

For those of you that would like to purchase your kit, you may buy one for $7 at our next Pack meeting on Monday, April 23. Alternatively, you can purchase one at any Scout Shop. I recommend the one located at 1211 East Dyer Road, Santa Ana 92705 (Right off the Dyer Road Exit of the 55 Freeway). The Scout Shop also sells decals and other accessories. The boats are easier to build than the Pinewood Derby cars but they do take some time and must be built according to certain specifications (see attachment). Please note that we will racing the Trimaran Boat. Other versions (ie. Standard SailboatCatamaran and Hydroplane) will not be used or allowed this year. We want all the participants to race thesame style boat in order to make things fair.

This event is open to all Cub Scouts (including current Lions who will actually be Tigers by this date) and siblings. Lions will be racing other Lions, Tigers will be racing other Tigers, etc. Siblings will be racing in a separate “Open Division”. We will be handing out medals for the top 3 Lions, Tigers, Wolves, Bears, Webelos/AOL’s and those in the Open Division. The top three overall winners for the entire pack will receive trophies. We will also be handing out certificates for the following categories:

  1. Most Original
  2. Most Patriotic
  3. Most “Pirate-Like”
  4. Funniest
  5. Most Unusual

We will be selling hot dogs, chips and drinks so bring your appetite !

Family Camp (August 3-5th)
Cabrillo Beach Youth Waterfront Sports Center

Parents, we are pleased to announce that Pack 227 has made reservations at Cabrillo Beach Youth Waterfront Sports Center from Friday, Aug. 3 to Sunday, Aug. 5, 2018. Cabrillo Beach is operated by the Greater Los Angeles Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America. It is located in San Pedro Harbor (approximate 45 minute drive from Huntington Beach).

The facility provides a wide variety of water activities including rowing, canoeing, kayaking as well as a pool. There is also a handicraft shop and Scout Store. Those interested can visit the nearby Cabrillo Marine Aquarium (www.cabrillomarineaquarium.org). They request a $5 donation for adults and $1 donation for children. On Saturday night we will have a “campfire” in the amphitheater. Attached is the basic schedule for the weekend. For more information on Cabrillo Beach please go to their website (www.cabrilloyouthcamp.org).

The cost for everything is $85 per person (children 5 and under are $30 but are not permitted to go on boats). This includes 4 meals (Saturday breakfast, lunch and dinner and Sunday breakfast). You will be responsible for your own dinner on Friday. The price includes all of the activities listed above. Since we will be camping you will need to bring your own tent, sleeping bag, etc. Siblings are welcome. We currently have reservations for 50 people. Please look at your summer calendar and let me know if you are interested in attending. If you get me a check (made payable to “Pack 227”) then you are guaranteed a spot. Checks can be dropped off at the St. Bonaventure School Office (not the Parish Office), mailed or dropped off to Tom Scully (4841 Curtis Circle, HB 92649) or given to him at a Pack meeting. Don’t let the slots fill up before you decide !

This will be a great weekend for the entire family. If you have any questions, need additional information or would like to RSVP please e-mail (tscully@wfbm.com) or call Tom at (714) 392-6698.
